The French media have already announced Robert Kubica’s transfer to Renault, although it has not been officially confirmed yet.

There are two races left until the end of the current season, but the future of the Polish driver has been clarifying for the last several months. At first there were talks about Ferrari, but soon it turned out that Italians have another favorite – Fernando Alonso, who decided to leave Renault.

The French state openly that they have found a suitable successor. The Spanish driver himself recommended Kubica: “There is no better driver, I’ve known him for years,” he said.

Although the French management has not officially confirmed joining the team by the Polish driver, Daniele Morelli, the manager of Kubica said that “the die is cast” and Renault has been chosen.

“While we refused proposals from Toyota and Williams, the key criteria for the decision were the length of the contract, name of the engineer, team’s achievements and quality of the engines”, said Morelli.

Kubica much in demand

•October 2, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Robert Kubica definitely cannot complain about lack of proposals. Formerly there has been some rumor about the possible cooperation with Ferrari, then Renault and lately another company indicated their interest in the Polish driver.

The managers of Toyota have been thinking of leaving F1 before the Japanese Grand Prix, but lately they have been reconsidering it. The heads of the Japanese team admit openly that Kubica is on the top of their wish list. “We are highly interested in hiring Robert Kubica,” said John Howett, the president of Toyota.

It is easy to spot disappointment among the Japanese team after this year’s results. “Bolids enabling to win first places are at our disposal. Unfortunately, it is not reflected in the results and it is so not only due to our team’s work and the tools,” said Howett.

Also French company Renault is interested in recruiting our driver. Kubica would replace Fernando Alonso, who is leaving for Ferrari. The Spanish driver recommended Kubica to his former company, claiming that he is of the best F1 drivers.

On Thursday, Kubica stated that he is about 90% sure which team he is going to choose. The final decision will be made next week.

Kubica is no. 50 on the list of 100 Greatest Drivers Ever

•April 25, 2008 • Leave a Comment

The prestigious “F1 Racing” magazine has recently published the list of 100 best F1 drivers in history with the Polish driver Robert Kubica assuming a position in the middle.

The list continues with the names of experienced drivers such as Mark Webber and Jarno Trulli who are currently taking part in races. Obviously, “F1 Racing” has appreciated Kubica’s brave and aggressive style as well as his outstanding results in the qualifications during this season.

Sauber Nick Heidfeld from BMW team is 49th on the list. Ayrton Senna was voted the best driver in history and Juan Manuel Fangio took the third place.

The Polish driver revealed details on his recent diet which enabled him to lose 7 kilograms. “I eat very little; only muesli for breakfast, soup for lunch and fish with vegetables for dinner. Initially I was constantly hungry, but now I’m used to it. I had to give up cookies, chocolate and my favorite pasta” says Kubica.

Losing 7 kilograms is one of the reasons for his success in the current season. It made possible to place the ballast in the car differently so that the overall balance was improved. The car works far more efficiently now.

Does tomography put you at risk of cancer?

Scientist warn that overuse of tomography may increase the risk of cancer. Frequent usage of tomography may prove responsible for as many as 2% of cases of cancer in the next dozen years, says Dr. Eric J. Hall and Dr. David J. Brenner from the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University. In the case of a single examination the risk is minuscule; however, the growing rate of repeated examinations emerges to be alarming. At the moment CAT scanning is one of the most common and popular medical tests, the reasons for that being its low cost, painlessness and high performance. Tomograph employs the same kind of rays as the X-ray apparatus, but more intensified. According to prof. Janusz Braziewicz, the director of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine at the Oncology Center in Świętokrzyskie (Zakład Medycyny Nuklearnej Świętokrzyskiego Centrum Onkologii), the core of the problem is not the radiodiagnosis itself, but its overuse. Such modern methods are used first and foremost in order to save life. Most experts consider the findings of Hall and Brenner, published in the renowned ‘New England Journal Medicine’ magazine, to be rather overstated.

Where shall wolves, bobcats and moose go?

•November 26, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Before Poland becomes cut through and through by highways and speed roads, we need to establish crossing tunnels for wild animals. The project of underground tunnels designed by Mammal Research Institute in Białowieża would connect the European Nature 2000 network. It would protect routes frequented by animals, sylvan areas and river valleys in the first place. According to Włodzimierz Jędrzejewski, the construction of highways constitutes a major threat to wild animals such as the bobcat, moose or bear. Migration is essential for them to survive and preserve the genetic disparity which is a necessary condition for keeping the species genetically strong. It is asserted that a single bobcat needs a space up to 350 square kilometers, while a pack of wolves needs from 90 to 350 square kilometers. Crossing tunnels have already been successfully employed in other European countries such as Germany and Austria. Recently an overground tunnel has been constructed in Puszcza Rzepińska. The key criteria for corridors to be usable for animals are that they have to be undistinguishable from the natural environment, 50 to 60 meters wide and covered with the local plants. At the moment the Agency of Spatial Development in Lublin (Biuro Planowania Przestrzennego w Lublinie) is cooperating with the Mammal Research Institute to make a map of the ecological corridors in Lubelskie province. The project also imposes certain demands on road developers; they will have to enable animals to migrate freely.

Retirement: who should be first?

•November 23, 2007 • Leave a Comment

“It is unacceptable that Polish women should receive subsistence pensions,” says Civic Platform. “It is public knowledge that they obtain lower wages and take maternity leaves and thus are deprived of possibility of earning fair pensions.” Therefore, the government plans to reduce men’s pensions and increase women’s pensions in return.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk is now faced with one of the most challenging tasks in his political career, namely finishing the pension reform. The fact that the reform was originally undertaken by Law and Justice, and resulted in an abysmal fiasco, adds to the gravity of the problem.

At the moment ZUS is the only institution paying out pensions, however, in 13 months the Polish will also be obtaining pensions from the retirement funds which are governed by their own peculiar rules. In practice it means that the pension rates are directly proportional to the money poured.

Already 13.2 million of Polish have joined the retirement funds and the money gathered since 1999 amounts to 140 billion zł.

Women will lose most in the face of the new rules of estimating of pensions due to the fact that they retire 5 years earlier, take maternity leaves (during which their retirement fund premium is lower) and usually obtain lower wages. All things considered, their pensions may possibly only amount to 60% of men’s pensions.

Civic Platform claims to have found a solution. The idea is to calculate the average lifespan, which is a crucial factor in pension planning, and establish the rate of pensions accordingly. Statistically, women live 5 years longer than men.

“If it had not been for our idea, women would fall victims of the pension scheme. We mustn’t consent to subsistence pensions for women,” says Zbigniew Chlebowski, the head of the parliamentary club of the Civic Platform.

Marek Góra, one of the originators of the pension reform, is of the same opinion. As he says, “we mustn’t make pension rates dependent on gender.” According to Mr Góra, everybody should be treated equally since there are numerous factors decisive in lifespan aside from gender, such as education, general wellness or genetic code. Since it is impossible to take all of these into account, we shall not base decisions solely on one of them.

Przemysław Gosiewski, the deputy Prime Minister of the previous government, did not consent to the aforementioned idea. In his opinion the losses of men are out of proportion to women’s profit.

By reckoning prepared by Jeremi Mordasiewicz from the Polish Confederation of Private Employers- Lewiatan,  a 30-year old female kindergarten teacher, who now obtains a gross salary of 1600 zł, will in 30 years be granted a pension of 600 zł, while the pension of her brother, whose salary is now the same, will come to 1500 zł. Under changes suggested by Civic Platform she would receive a pension of 700 zł (15% more), and her brother would obtain a pension of 1275 zł (15% less).

Teresa Guzel, the director of ZUS department, is of the opinion that politicians are now faced with a somber problem. They are in quandary about whether or not to sympathize with women and consequently increase their pensions. A question: ‘why the system shall compensate for someone’s low retirement fund premium?’ may be posed. Guzel claims that the entire problem would be non-existent if men and women retired at the same age.
